Distinguished and Famous people from Port Stephens
📚 John “Stinker” Clarke
John “Stinker” Clarke brings Port Stephens history and fishing knowledge to public audiences through books and talks. Council programmes describe his blend of maritime stories, local people and first-hand anecdotes, with humour helping the past remain approachable. His fishing sessions likewise draw on decades around the water, addressing the problem of finding fish before worrying about catching them. That combination makes him a distinctive local voice: practical knowledge and community memory travel together. The nickname may attract attention, but the enduring association is his work recording and sharing the region’s stories with residents and visitors.
🧭 William Edward Parry
Naval explorer William Edward Parry came to Australia in 1829 to manage the Australian Agricultural Company. His inspection of its vast Port Stephens grant convinced him that much of the land was unsuitable for the intended sheep enterprise. He commissioned further surveys and negotiated for land elsewhere, including on the Liverpool Plains. The episode links a celebrated Arctic explorer with the practical and political difficulties of a colonial pastoral business. Those grants were also part of the expansion of European occupation onto Aboriginal Country. Parry’s Australian work involved surveying, correspondence and negotiation rather than the polar voyages for which his name is more widely remembered.
🏁 Ken Tubman
Ken Tubman spent the last seven years of his life in a retirement village at Shoal Bay, but retirement did not entirely end his pharmacy work. He still worked one day a week in a local pharmacy, where friends and customers from his Maitland years could call in. His other career had made him a nationally known rally driver, including victory in the inaugural Redex trial and the 1974 World Cup rally. Shoal Bay’s connection is therefore both a later home and continuing everyday work, a quieter chapter after a sporting life built around unusually long drives.
